حَتّى تَساقَطَ أَنيابٌ وَأَضراسُ
There is no good for the mouth in prolonging its life
until its canines and molars fall out.

Will bright swords or straightened spears protect you,
or will camels and horses save you?

You squandered sheep by making the wolf their guardian;
did you not know that the wolf is a habitual thief?

Though you see the forest lion preying,
he may be a fierce hunter only for a time.

فَالنَفسُ أُنثى لَها بِالمَوتِ إِعراسُ
Let the soul not fear a death that befalls her;
for the soul is female, and in death she has her wedding.

They made a pact; each head among them is a wolf,
that head drawing profit to itself.

You entered darkness and grew restless, seeking among them all
a lamp for the night—yet no lamp is among these people.

The first of them and the last have learned unbelief;
for every land has a congregation and schools.

And before long, power will pass
away from them, and the bells' voices will fade.
