Exalted is He who, through death, made our rich
How mighty is He who with death turned back our wealthy and poor alike
Like our poor, and our resident like the departing one.
As well as our settled folk and wanderers!

How swift the change! If the desert grows bleary-eyed
How swift is change! If the crescent moon is touched
With its mirage, night is an eye-painter's kohl.
By its mirage, the night grows intensely dark.

Salvation from sickness is beyond reach. The image of
Radiant moon dwindles to an emaciated crescent.
The shining moon turns into a thin crescent.

Have you marveled at the newborn child in his cradle?
Are you amazed by the new-born babe in his cradle
He had not taken a step—how did he journey by night without mounts?
Who moved without walking or riding any mount?

He lived for two days, was given a third,
Then found rest from the long, arduous course.
Then rested from the shifting days.

قَطَعَ المَسافَةَ في ثَلاثِ مَراحِلِ
How many years his father journeyed! Yet what a marvel he is:
How many a year has his father walked! Oh how
He covered the distance in three stages.
He crossed the distance in but three stages!
رُفِعَتwere raised لَهُfor him لُجَجُthe deep waters البِحارِof the seas فَعامَهاso he swam across them

وَنَجا وَأَصبَحَ سالِماً بِالساحِلِ
The deep waters of the seas rose before him, and he swam across them,
The seas' barriers were lifted for him and he lived through them
And he escaped and came to be safe upon the shore.
And survived to arrive safe on shore.
