Whenever an aroma rises from your cooking pot, send

A little to your nearest neighbor, and do not delay.

For a little food discharges an obligation,

Especially toward a child or a pregnant woman.

And if one whose need is plainer than yours comes to stay, ensure

His guest-meal, even if you gather it from the ants’ provisions.

And I know that the First, the One, is able

To provision the believers from sand.

May God pardon me! Many a wind will blow over me,

And scatter my dust, from the south and from the north.

And a mouth’s occupation in seeking God’s forgiveness for its sin

Is worthier of it than mention of Zaynab or Juml.

And if you leave your obstinate soul untended for a long while,

It will exact tears in streams from your eyelids.
