وَفَرتُI let grow العارِضَينِboth sides of the beard وَلَمand did not يُعارِضoppose
مَشيبيmy gray hair إِذwhen تَناثَرَit spread مَلقَطاياmy two plucking fingers
I let both sides of my beard grow; no resistance was offered
by my two plucking fingers to my gray hair as it spread.
وَإِنَّand indeed البيضَwhite hairs مِثلَlike السودِblack hairs عِنديto me
فَكَيفَso how يَخُصُّsingles out تِلكَthose مُسَلَّطاياmy two appointed pluckers
And indeed, white hairs are like black ones to me;
so how can my two appointed pluckers single those out?
مَطايَmy back عَلَيهِupon it لِلأَيّامِfor the days عِبءٌa burden
كَأَنّيas though I لِلأَذاةِfor suffering مِنَamong المَطاياthe mounts
My back bears the burden of the days,
as though I were one of suffering’s mounts.
مَحَلّيmy dwelling إِنif جَلانيdrove me away عَنكَfrom you خَطبٌa calamity
فَمِنthen from خَطَأيmy wrongdoing تُراحُyou are relieved وَمِنand from خَطاياsins
My dwelling, if a calamity drives me away from you,
then you will be relieved of my wrongdoing and sins.
وَماand not شَعرٌhair بِرَأسِكَon your head فيin عِدادٍnumber
بِأَكثَرَmore numerous مِنthan ذُنوبِكَyour sins وَالخَطاياand transgressions
And the hairs on your head are not, in number,
more numerous than your sins and transgressions.

People’s gifts are withheld; so seek
the reward of our King, lavish in gifts.
كُفيتُكَI have spared you أَنthat تُرابَyou be alarmed الدَهرَever مِنّيbecause of me
وَلَمand did not تَكفُفyou restrain بُزاتَكَyour hawks عَنfrom قَطاياmy sandgrouse
I have spared you ever feeling alarm because of me,
yet you have not kept your hawks from my sandgrouse.
