It is as though the states of the lifetimes we live through

Were horses, their predecessors replaced by their successors.

So a single one of them bears all things together,

Like the flesh of the eye; then unloading follows it.

They forever unload it for the one coming after it,

So they neither destroy nor repeat their bygone states.

Take it lightly, for the world does not endure,

And its unadorned are no different from its adorned.

And reason deems the days you behold,

White as they are, new occurrences in the gloom of its nights.

My soul and the people's souls are enthralled by it,

Yet we declare that we care nothing for it.

    فَاِنظُر هَل أَنتَ مَعَ السالينَ ساليها

    She bade me detach myself from its beguiling charms;

So see whether you, among the detached, are detached from it.

And never do you see anyone but one besotted with it,

By nature, though in words he loathes it.

And the body is undoubtedly earthly, yet joined

To it are subtle essences exalted by their exalter.

    وَقيلَ خَرَّت إِلَيهِ مِن مَعاليها

    So it was said: they came to it from earth close by;

And it was said: they fell to it from their heights.

And God, in His wisdom, has the power to call

The last among His creatures their first.
