It is the soul: a scourge of Time has afflicted it

With loss, and a warbler has sung to it that it might rejoice.

And it did not know whence our steps are numbered,

Nor where resting places are decreed for our sides.

And these hours are nothing but speckled serpents,

And the fingers' sinews have not dared to touch them.

I see people as the dust's breaths: one comes forth

Toward us, and another is sent back, returning to the earth.

I drank my forty years, gulp by gulp—

So, O bitter aloes, drinking you does me no good!

We have been ignorant; so one alive in error is dead,

One possessed by stupor, who in his error never reconsiders.

    وَحَمدٌ لِذِئبِ الخَرقِ يَقظانُ هاجِعُ

    He censures you when he meets you awake, himself asleep;

Yet praise be to the wilderness wolf: awake though sleeping.
