The greatest weapon with which a man wards off his adversary

Is a death-hour deferred on the day of battle.

And many an armored warrior carries a keen-edged sword

Into war, while the fates play and mock.

And your treasure in the dust-colored earth is bound to be lost,

But in the green-hued sky it is guarded and stored away.

    You boast, supposing yourself noble,

And your going forth boasting is reproach enough for you.

And human honor is nothing but a gift

Brought by the nights and by fate held in thrall.
