I escaped bitter cold in the barren wastes,

And many a harsh day short of Tikrit.

How many venomous snakes and lions there are in Samawah—

Each endowed in its maw with the power to put others to flight.

I did not visit your home until my weariness had worn me thin,

And the pale camels faltered in an expert guide’s tracks.

And goodness grows on earth like the citron,

And evil was made to give off sulfurous smoke.
