وَلاand no بُدَّescape أَنّيthat I سالِكٌtraveling along ذَلِكَthat الفَجّاthe pass
Every rider has made for a single mountain pass,
and I must travel that same pass.

And a devoted mother and a dove are alike:
one nourished a child in his cradle, the other a squab.
فَلاso do not تَبكُرَنset out at dawn يَوماًon any day بِكَفِّكَin your hand مُديَةٌa knife

So never set out at dawn with a knife in your hand,
to kill a chick toddling in its haunts.

In his earthly life, a swimmer in deep waters looked back
longingly toward the shore, after reaching the heart of the deep.

And he hoped for things that were not near
to him; events denied him what he hoped for.

He hopes for a livelihood—who can assure him it will last?
And will Time spare the poor man and what he hoped for?
فَلاso do not تَبتَئِسgrieve لِلرِزّقِover sustenance إِنif بَضَّit trickled فاتِراًfaintly

So do not grieve over sustenance if it trickles faintly,
nor rejoice if your sustenance surges or pours in torrents.
أَعُوّامَO swimmers بَحرٍof a sea إِنif أُصِبتُمyou are stricken فَهَيِّنٌthen it is slight

O swimmers in a sea, if you are stricken, it is a small matter;
and if you escape, God, your Lord, has saved you.
ضَلِلتُمyou lost your way فَهَلso is there مِنany كَوكَبٍstar يُهتَدىone is guided بِهِby it

فَقَدfor indeed طالَhas been long ماthat جَنَّfell الظَلامُthe darkness وَماand that دَجّىspread gloom
You have lost your way—is there a star by which to be guided?
For darkness has long descended and spread its gloom.

So do not trust the pious man not to do what
causes harm, even if he visits mosques or makes the pilgrimage.

Nor accept anything from a lying peddler
who schemed in defense of doctrines and argued their case.
فَذَلِكَfor that man غاويwayward الصَدرِat heart قَلبيmy heart كَقَلبُهُlike his heart

For that man is wayward at heart; my heart is like his:
whenever admonition fills his ear, he spits it out.

And indeed, human bodies possess instincts:
when they spur the seeker of evil toward it, he persists.

So I do not grieve for the world when it departs;
for in it I was neither a spearhead nor a spear's butt-spike.

And indeed, it was created crooked, like its crescent moon,
which will, along with it, remain bent until the Resurrection.

It is all one to the soul whose inward intent is foul,
whether it visited Mecca for the rites or Wajj.

For at al-Ta'if there is pure, dark-red wine;
when it courses through a peaceful man's belly, he flares up.

in pain, in the wake of the slain man whose head was split!

Diluted wine—were it to mingle, while he was sane,
with Thabir, he would collapse in folly and quake.

I have seen a young man like an old camel, grazing awhile;
but if loads touch his withers, he cries out.
