خَيرُthe best النِساءِwomen اللَواتيthose who لاnot يَلِدنَbear children لَكُمfor you
فَإِنso if وَلَدنَthey bear children فَخَيرُthen the best النَسلِoffspring ماthat which نَفَعاbrought benefit
The best women are those who bear you no children.
The best of women are those who do not bear children for you
If they bear children, the best offspring are those who bring benefit.
For if they do, the best offspring are those who benefit
وَأَكثَرُand most النَسلِoffspring يَشقىsuffer الوالِدانِboth parents بِهِbecause of it
فَلَيتَهُso would that it كانَhad been عَنaway from آبائِهِits fathers دُفِعاwarded off
And most offspring make both parents suffer;
And most offspring cause misery for their parents
if only they had been kept away from their fathers!
If only they had been driven away from their forefathers
أَضاعَruined دارَيكَyour two abodes مِنof دُنياthis world وَآخِرَةٍand the hereafter

They ruin both your abodes—this world and the hereafter;
He wasted your home, worldly life and hereafter
they neither help the living nor intercede for the dead.
Neither alive to be useful nor dead to intercede
وَكَمand many a سَليلٍson رَجاهُhad hopes for him لِلجَمالِfor adornment أَبٌa father
فَكانَthen became خَزياًa disgrace بِأَعلىat the top of هَضبَةٍa hill رُفِعاraised aloft
And many a son a father hoped would be an adornment
And how many young men a father hoped for beauty
became a disgrace raised upon a hilltop.
But became disgrace raised on the highest hill
