أُبيدُI am destroyed عَلىin التَناسُبِdue proportion كُلَّevery يَومٍday
كَأَنّيas though I لَمdid not أُجِبtraverse بيداًdeserts فَبيداand then more deserts
I am destroyed by degrees each day,
I am destroyed due to disproportion every day
As though I had not crossed desert after desert.
As if I did not strike with both hands so I perish
وَأَقصانيand kept me far away مِنَfrom الرُؤَساءِthe rulers كَونيmy being
وَكَونُهُمُand their being لِخالِقِناto our Creator عَبيداservants
And what kept me far from rulers was that I,
And the leaders estrange me for being me
And they, are servants of our Creator.
While they are servants to our Creator
صَلاتيmy prayer فيin الظَهائِرِthe noonday heats لاnot اِصطِلائيmy basking
بِهِنَّin them أَرومُI seek زَبداًbutter فيin زَبيداZabid
I pray in the noonday heats, rather than bask
My prayers in the mornings are not for show
In them; I seek butter in Zabid.
Through them I intend to gather foam in Zabid
قَضاءُthe decree اللَهِof God يُفحِمُنيleaves me speechless وَشيكاًsoon
وَلَوand even if كُنتُI were الحُطَيئَةَal-Hutay'ah أَوor لَبيداLabid
God's decree will soon leave me speechless,
God's decree will soon defeat me
Even were I al-Hutay'ah or Labid.
Even if I were Hutay'a or Labid
كَأَنَّas though ذَويthose enjoying التَنَعُّمِluxury فيamong البَراياhumankind
نَعامٌostriches راحَwent out يَلتَقِطُpicking up الهَبيداcolocynth seeds
It is as though the pampered among humankind
It's as if the luxuriant ones in the deserts
Were ostriches gone out to pick up colocynth seeds.
Are ostriches gone to pick up seeds
