    There is no good for the mouth in prolonging its life

    Until canines and molars fall out.

    Are you departing, or anchored in anguish,

    Until the cords of your world betray you?

    Will gleaming swords or straightened spears protect you,

    Or will camels and horses rescue you?

    You have lost a flock by making the wolf its guardian.

    Did you not know that the wolf is a thief?

    And if you see the forest lion devouring prey,

    He may be a fierce predator for a time.

    فَالنَفسُ أُنثى لَها بِالمَوتِ إِعراسُ

    Do not frighten the soul with a death that befalls it;

    For the soul is female, and death is her wedding.

    They have sworn an alliance; each chief among them is a wolf.

    That chief draws profit to himself.

    You entered darkness, then grew agitated, seeking among them all

    A lamp for the night—yet among the people there is no lamp.

    فَكُلُّ أَرضٍ بِها جَمعٌ وَمِدارسُ

    Their first and their last have learned unbelief;

    For every land has an assembly and schools.

    And before long, power will pass

    Away from them, and the bells' sounds will grow faint.
