وَفيand in التُرابِthe dust لَعَمريby my life يُرفَتُis reduced to fragments الجَسَدُthe body
وَفي التُرابِ لَعَمري يُرفَتُ الجَسَدُ
The soul departs, so its whereabouts are unknown.
And in the dust, by my life, the body crumbles.

إِلى الزَوالِ فَفيمَ الضَغنُ وَالحَسَدُ
And we know that we, in the end,
Are bound for extinction—so why rancor and envy?

By death’s ravages: no necklace then, nor palm-fiber rope.

The gazelle and its fawn encounter a fatal blow
From their doom; so too the lion cub and the lion.

عَلى الفَسادِ فَغَيٌّ قَولُنا فَسَدوا
And we are in a world whose beginnings were fashioned
On corruption—so our saying ‘They became corrupt’ is folly.

They made themselves marketable through obscenity and ignorance, for they sold well
Among the foolish, though in reason’s eyes they were unsalable.
