لاdo not تَعذُلانيyou two reproach me فَالَّذيfor what أَبتَغيI seek
مِنfrom هَذِهِthis الدُنياworld حَقيرٌpaltry يَسيرslight
Do not reproach me, you two, for what I seek
Reproach me not, for all I seek
From this world is paltry and slight.
From this life's trifling wares and weak.
بِتُّI have become أَسيراًa captive فيin يَديthe two hands of بُرهَةٍa span of time
تَسيرُit travels بيwith me وَقتِيَmy lifetime إِذwhile لاnot أَسيرُI move
I have become a captive in the hands of a span of time;
Held fast in the clutch of fate I stay,
It carries me along through my lifetime, while I do not move,
While my days and nights glide away.
كَطائِرٍlike a bird قيلَit was said أَلاwill you not تَغتَديyou go forth at dawn
فَقالَso it said أَنّيhow can I? وَجَناحَيwith my wing كَسيرbroken
Like a bird asked, “Will you not go forth at dawn?”
Like a bird when they said, Refrain,
That replied, “How can I, with my wing broken?”
And he said, Nay I and my wings remain.
