    O people, praise has exceeded your worth,

    And praises have fallen short of your lord's stature.

    When they make use of valuable goblets

    For wine, it is sin they have scooped up.

    ما لِلمَسامِعِ عَمّا قُلنَ مُنتَدَحُ

    And they have songstresses to whom they listen;

    The ears have no escape from what they have said.

    وَتِلكَ عِندي مُصيباتٌ لَهُم فُدُحُ

    They said, 'They have become adept at singing for us';

    But those, to my mind, are grievous calamities for them.

    What they wear is stolen from the peacocks,

    And they are, after all, the loud-singing turtledoves of midmorning.
