When you ask for testimony, wretched is the testimony

That the flatterer hopes to lend and have repaid in kind.

And surely the worst of men's companions are a band

Who give you their honor rather than their clothes.

Indeed, the nights do not pass over them

Except to fulfill their designs upon them.

And have you not seen biers being carried,

The misguided walking before them and at their sides?

    تِلكَ المَصاعِبُ أَتعَّبَت مَن راضَها

    You seek from hopes the docility of a willing helper;

Those unruly steeds have wearied whoever tamed them.

The physician went early to administer medicine, yet death has

A cup that reaches them all, the healthy and the sick.
