He aims at you, though Orion lies below his mark—
You wrong him while the turtledove coos near him,
an enemy who faults the moon when it is full.
A foe faults the full moon at its peak.

If the saying becomes common gossip

The eagles cannot equal his doves.

None hides its defects from its fruits.

Even if he gives the world as ransom.

You have settled, among the heights, on a towering mountain's summit,
You gained the boldness of the lofty, so much
whose beasts of prey wish they were among its lambs.
The beasts wish they gained it from their audacity.

It is from the perfumes of his clothes.

it settles there, confident in its protection.
It settles there trusting its grip.

Dwellings - if the doves return with dignity -
no inhabitant would be frightened by his doom.
None who seizes them will be disturbed by their cooing.

They are not pleased with the crumbs from his meal.

Two whitened clouds - since Allah showed them to us -
for us by God, we have cared nothing for His dark clouds.
We do not care for the darkness of clouds.

You are like the pond of elation lowering itself

To drink from its flowers until it was sated from its thorns.

that goes to its visitors for them to touch it.
So it walked to its visitors to greet them.

At dawn, the heart of its protector sighing over it.

returning pale from its scorching heat.
Its sustenance all rationed from its swords.

It hastened lighting from its fire with its flints.

Ransomed it from barrenness with some of its bones.

وأبْعَدُand the furthest شيءٍthing ضَيْفُهhis guest مِنfrom طَعامِهِhis food
His gravest calamity is the hamstringing of his old she-camel,
No sound of strings was better to its ear
and the furthest thing from his food is his guest.
Than the gurgling of its sheep.
أخوa man of طمَعٍgreed لاnot يَنزِلُalights الرّكْبُthe caravan أرضَهin his land
فيَرْحَلُthen departs إلاexcept مُوقَراًladen مِنwith مَلامهِblame of him
A greedy fellow: no caravan alights in his land
O Lord, do not let a house touched by affliction
and leaves without being laden with blame for him.
Pass by it except empty of its germs.
إذاwhen أعرَضَتْappears نارُthe fire of الحُباحِبِal-Hubahib فيin الدّجَىthe darkness

When the fire of al-Hubahib appears in the darkness,
If it is rain then divert it from its lands,
he hastens with his tinder to take a spark from it.
If it is death, then pour it from its calamities.
وإنْand if ضُرِبَتْare pitched أطْنابُهhis tent ropes بتَنُوفَةٍin a wilderness

نَأىwithdraws الضّبُّthe spiny-tailed lizard عنهاfrom it خِيفَةًfor fear منof عُرامهِhis ferocity
If his tent ropes are pitched in a wilderness,
If not for Ali's disdain of him due to his status
the spiny-tailed lizard withdraws, fearing his ferocity.
Blame would unleash upon him its sword of vengeance.
إذاwhen هِيضَis rebroken عظمُthe bone of البَكْرِthe young camel وَدّhe wishes لوif only أنّهthat
فَداهُransomed it منfrom الإعْناتِinjury بعضُsome of عِظامهِhis bones
When a young camel's bone is rebroken, he wishes that
It is honey but misfortunes made it bitter
some of his own bones could ransom it from injury.
And their mouths gaped to devour it.
وماand not نَغَمُthe music of الأوْتارِthe strings فيin سمْعِthe hearing of أُذْنِهِhis ear
بأحْسَنَany sweeter صَوْتاًin sound مِنthan رُغاءthe bellowing of سَوامهِhis grazing herd
The music of strings, to his listening ear,
Its enemies fear its might while it is still
is no sweeter than his grazing herd's bellowing.
Like the touch of embers before it flares.
فياso O رَبّLord لاlet not يَمْرُرْpass بدارٍby a dwelling يحُلّهاhe inhabits
منof المُزْنِthe rain clouds إلاexcept خالِياتُthe empty ones of جَهامهِits rainless clouds
O Lord, let no clouds pass a dwelling he inhabits
Many armored men are feared while their swords are sheathed,
except their empty, rainless masses.
Serious matters the selves dread without reaching them.
وإنand if كانthere is غَيْثٌrain فاعْدُهُthen divert it عنfrom بلادهِhis lands
وإنand if كانthere is موْتٌdeath فاسْقِهاthen water them منwith زُؤامهِits swift destruction
If there is rain, turn it away from his lands;
When every city is amazed at laughing for him
if there is death, drench them in its swift destruction.
Its wealth weeps from its injustice and seizure.
ولولاand but for احتِقارٌcontempt منfrom عَلِيّAli بشانهfor his standing
لسَلّwould draw عليهagainst him الذّمُّblame سيْفَthe sword of انتِقامهِits vengeance
But for Ali's contempt for his standing,
Many possessions of kingdoms were lost beneath his seal
blame would draw against him the sword of its vengeance.
Guarded from him in fear of his departure.
هوَhe الشّهْدُhoney مَجّتْهspat him out الخُطوبُcalamities مرَارَةًfor bitterness

وقدand already فَغَرَتْthey opened wide أفْواهَهاtheir mouths لالتِهامهِto devour him
He is honey that calamities spat out for bitterness,
The corners of Iraq blamed it, but his departure from them
though they had opened their mouths wide to devour him.
Is their greatest blame.
تَهابُfear الأعاديthe enemies بأسَهhis might وهْوَwhile he ساكِنٌis still
كماjust as هِيبَwas feared مَسُّtouching الجَمْرِembers قبلbefore اضطرامهِtheir flaring
His enemies fear his might even when he is still,
So when the morning found no fault in him
as touching embers is feared before they flare.
It blamed the people it faulted for their cessation.
ورُبّand many a جُرازٍkeen sword يُتّقَىis feared وهْوَwhile it مُغْمَدٌsheathed

Many a keen sword is feared while sheathed,
If Baghdad could, it would stay up for him
and a deep sea terrifies the soul before one plunges into it.
Yearning in its corners for his stay.
إذاwhen ضَحِكَتْlaughs عُجْباًin admiration بهof him كلُّevery بلْدةٍtown

When every town laughs in admiration of him,
When will the intense darkness imprison a bolt
his wealth weeps at his oppression and mistreatment.
To resist it and emerge radiant from its ashes?
تَحَفّظَit guards itself منهagainst him خِيفَةًfor fear منof رَحِيلِهِits departure
وكمand how much مالwealth of مَلْكٍa king ضاعَwas lost تحتَunder خِتامِهِhis seal
It guards itself against him, afraid of being sent away;
I advise the rulers of the countries’ possessions
yet many a king's fortune has been lost beneath his seal.
With advice given by one of merit in his positions.
وذامَتْهُand blamed him أفْناءُthe clans of العِراقِIraq وإنّماbut only

تَرَحُّلُهُhis departure عنهُنّfrom them أكبَرُthe greatest ذامهِblame against him
The clans of Iraq blamed him, but
I specify it over all of its eminent leaders
his leaving them is his greatest fault.
And shun the riffraff from it.
فكانso he was الصّباyouth إذْwhen لمnot يَجِدْfind فيهin him عائِبٌa faultfinder

He was youth itself: when no faultfinder found in him
That Ali - all who gained wealth are poor
anything to say against his form, he blamed him for passing.
If they do not hoard some of his words.

Had Baghdad been able, it would have entangled
I legislated praising him for the poets
the passes against him, longing for him to stay.
As Abraham legislated pilgrimage to its site.

Whenever the enveloping overcast imprisons a lightning flash,
So Dhigham praises him with its roar,
it cleaves it and emerges radiant from its piled clouds.
And Shadin praises him with its groan.

I owe the rulers of the lands a word of counsel,
This is legitimate and doctrinal for the eloquent,
undertaken by one who seeks divine reward in his service.
Whoever disobeys me breaks his leader’s command.

I reserve it for the chief of every clan,
and disdainfully withhold it from its rabble.

فقِيرٌis poor إذاif لمnot يَدّخِرْstores up مِنfrom كلامِهِhis words
Concerning Ali: everyone who has gained riches
is poor unless he stores up some of his words.
سنَنْتُI ordained لأرْبابِfor the masters of القَريضِverse امتداحَهpraising him
كماas سَنّordained إبراهيمُAbraham حَجَّpilgrimage to مَقامهِhis station
I have ordained his praise for the masters of verse,
as Abraham ordained pilgrimage to his station.

Thus a lion praises him with its roar,
and a young gazelle praises him with its bleat.

This is my law and creed for those who speak;
whoever disobeys me defies his imam's command.
