    If Qays left no desire of his

    unfulfilled, I have fulfilled no desire.

    And many a soul would have found a life of ease,

    had it not spent the night threatened by the deaths awaiting it.

    Your worldly affairs are a line inscribed by fate,

    and love of this world, ingrained in our natures, begins that line.

    We fasted from food one day; then there followed

    a breaking of the fast, after which we expect no fasting.

    Share with your needy fellow whatever wealth you have been given,

    and turn your thoughts away from the sister of distant neighbors.

    Live in dignity, and die unbowed.

    You were healed by rain after being watered by rain.

    Your home exhales musk though it is empty,

    like a perfume casket after its fragrant tawny contents are gone.

    As though the garden, once bedewed, had visited her at dawn,

    you were healed by rain after being watered by rain.

    And the proud bearing of her dwelling places is no flaw,

    since it arises from neither conceit nor insolence.

    And I do not cry to the ravens of youth, 'Alight!'

    Nor call to the raven of my head, 'Do not fly away!'

    And my heart bears care, sparing my body:

    my head is black-haired, and my back is unbent.

    لَكِنَّهُ اِبنُ تُرابٍ عَنهُ مُنفَطِرِ

    And your prince, O son of glory, has no pedigree;

    but he is a son of dust, sprung from it.

    نَأى وَلَم يَدنُ لِلمَعنى وَلم يَطُرِ

    And the name is a word brought to you by those who utter it;

    it stands far from the meaning, neither drawing near nor circling it.

    فَكَيفَ أَصبَحَ مَعزوّاً إِلى قَطَرِ

    Abu Na‘amah was born in al-A‘dan;

    so how did he come to be ascribed to Qatar?
