يُحَرِّقُburns نَفسَهُhimself الهِندِيُّthe Indian خَوفاًout of fear
وَيَقصُرُand falls short دونَof ماwhat صَنَعَhe has done الجِهادُreligious striving
The Indian burns himself out of fear,
The Indian burns himself in fear
And jihad falls short of what he has done.
And falls short of what jihad has done
وَماand not فِعلَتُهُdid it عُبّادُdevotees النَصارىthe Christians
وَلاnor شَرعِيَّةٌfollowers of religious law صَبَأواthey became Sabians وَهادواand they became Jews
And Christian devotees have not done this,
And what the Christian worshippers have done
Nor followers of religious law—Sabians and Jews.
There is no legitimacy in their Sabianism and Judaism
يُقَرِّبُbrings near جَسمَهُhis body لِلنارِto the fire عَمداًdeliberately
وَذَلِكَand that مِنهُon his part دينٌreligion وَاِجتِهادُand earnest striving
He deliberately brings his body near the fire,
He brings his body to the fire intentionally
And that, for him, is religion and earnest striving.
And that is his religion and his diligence
وَمَوتُand death المَرءِa person نَومٌsleep طالَlasted long جِدّاًvery
عَلَيهِfor him وَكُلُّand all عيشَتِهِhis life سُهادُsleeplessness
And a person's death is a sleep that lasts very long
And a person's death is a very long sleep
For him, while all his life is sleeplessness.
His whole livelihood was sedation
نُوَدَّعُwe are bid farewell بِالصَلاةِwith prayer وَداعَa farewell يَأسٍdespair
وَنُترَكُand we are left فيin التُرابِthe dust فَلاand so not نُهادُwe are disturbed
We are bid farewell with prayer—a farewell of despair,
We bid farewell with the prayer of despair
And we are left in the dust, not to be disturbed.
And we are left in the dust, so no condolences
أَهالُI am frightened مِنَby الثَرىthe soil وَالأَرضُand the earth أُمٌّa mother
وَأُمُّكَand your mother حِجرُهاher lap نِعَمَexcellent is المِهادُthe bed
I fear the soil, though the earth is a mother,
Family from the soil and the land is a mother
And your mother's lap is an excellent bed.
And your mother’s womb, what a good resting place

When the subtle spirit leaves me,
When the gentle soul departs me
Then may no recurring rains pour upon the decayed remains.
No downpour on the ruins or condolences
