    Did my riding camels trot, or was a low-lying plain granted them,

    rich in meadows, where vegetation is ever present?

    تُخالُ يَهوداً عاقَ عَن سَيرِها السَبتُ

    And night cloaked them, its bright stars having become monks;

    they seem like Jews whom the Sabbath kept from their journey.

    وَذاكَ حَديثٌ ما مُحَدِّثُهُ ثَبَتُ

    And talk of the protected pasture stirred them;

    and that is a tale whose teller is not trustworthy.

    And he who views the world through the eye of reason

    is reached by neither joy nor dejection.

    وَكَم جُبتَ جِنحاً قَبلَ أَن يُعبَدَ الجِبتُ

    God kept His promise, O full moon of heaven;

    and how many a span of night you traversed before al-Jibt was worshipped!

    Some people live whose bodies are never touched

    by sheer fabrics, nor is tanned hide cut into shoes for their feet.

    وَأَلهَبتُ دَهراً ثُمَّ أَدرَكَني الهَبتُ

    I ran for a time, then weariness put me to sleep;

    and I raced for an age, then feebleness overtook me.
