أَجَلُّthe greatest هِباتِgifts of الدَهرِTime تَركُwithholding المَواهِبِgifts
يَمُدُّit extends لِماtoward what أَعطاكَit gave you راحَةَthe palm of ناهِبِa plunderer
The greatest of Time’s gifts is the withholding of gifts;
it stretches a plunderer’s palm toward what it gave you.
وَأَفضَلُand better مِنthan عَيشِa life of الغِنىwealth عَيشُa life of فاقَةٍpoverty
وَمِنand than زِيِّthe garb of مَلكٍa king رائِقٍsplendid زِيُّthe garb of راهِبِa monk
And a life of poverty is better than a life of wealth;
and a monk’s garb than a king’s splendid attire.
وَماand not خِلتُهُI thought it إِلّاexcept سَيُبعَثُit will be raised حادِثاًnewly created
يُحِلُّit unfastens الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades عَنfrom جَبينِthe brow of الغَياهِبِdeep darkness
And I have thought only that Time will be raised anew,
unfastening the Pleiades from the brow of deep darkness.
جَلاit made shine فَرقَدَيهِits two Farqad stars (Calves) قَبلَbefore نوحٍNoah وَآدَمٍand Adam
إِلىup to اليَومِtoday لَمّاnot yet يُدعِياthey have been called فيamong القَراهِبِaged bulls
It made its two Farqad stars shine before Noah and Adam;
to this day they have not yet been called aged bulls.
وَليand I have مَذهَبٌa doctrine فيin هَجرِيَmy shunning الإِنسِhumankind نافِعٌbeneficial
إِذاwhen القَومُthe people خاضواthey waded فيinto اِختِيارِchoosing المَذاهِبِdoctrines
And in shunning humankind I have a useful doctrine,
when people wade into choosing doctrines.
أَراناI see us عَلىupon الساعاتِthe hours فُرسانَhorsemen of غارَةٍa raid
وَهُنَّand they بِناwith us يَجرينَthey race جَريَthe running of السَلاهِبِlong-bodied steeds
I see us astride the hours, horsemen on a raid,
and they race with us as long-bodied steeds do.
وَمِمّاand among what يَزيدُincreases العَيشَlife إِخلاقَthe wearing-out of مَلبَسٍa garment
تَأَسُّفُthe sorrow of نَفسٍa soul لَمdid not تُطِقhave the power to رَدَّbring back ذاهِبِwhat has gone
And among what makes life’s garment more threadbare
is the sorrow of a soul that could not bring back what had gone.
