حَمراءُred صافِيَةٌclear فَقيلَso it was called عُقارُwine (ʿuqār)
What ails the youth? His reason and wealth have been crippled
What ails the young man who has shunned his kin and wealth?
By a clear red wine, hence called ʿuqār.
A she-camel, bright red, called Ukar.
قُرِعَتwas mixed بِماءٍwith water وَهيَwhile it was ذائِبُmolten عَسجَدٍgold
فَطَفَتso floated عَلَيهِupon it مِنَof اللُجَينِsilver نِقارُnuggets
It was mixed with water, itself molten gold,
She was milked with water and was melting with desire,
So nuggets of silver floated upon it.
So leeches clung to her from the muddy hollows.
أَودىperished أَبوهاits father وَهوَand he was أَسوَدُblack حالِكٌintensely black
فَأَقامَso remained يَخلُفُهُtaking his place عَلَيهاover it القارُpitch
Its father perished, jet-black as he was;
Her owner perished while in utter darkness.
So pitch remained over it, taking his place.
So the drones pitched camp around her.
لَوif كانَhe were قُدساًMount Quds ثُمَّthen هَبَّتwafted ريحُهاits scent

If he were Mount Quds and the wine's scent then wafted
Were she Sanctuary, and the winds blew against her slopes,
Over his hills, no dignity would remain in him.
No honor would remain in her.

It has impoverished him, and in avoiding it lies wealth;
She has impoverished him, yet in avoiding her is wealth.
And from the Sovereign come his wealth and impoverishment.
From the King comes wealth and poverty.
لَوif تَحمِلُwere to carry الشَربُthe drinkers الرَواسِيَthe immovable mountains أَوهَمواthey would make it seem
أَنthat لَيسَthere are no فَوقَupon ظُهورِهِمtheir backs أَوقارُburdens
Were the drinkers to carry the immovable mountains, they would make it seem
If the celestial spheres could bear drinking, they would imagine
That no burdens lay upon their backs.
No glory remains above their backs.
