اِرتاحَتfound ease النَفسُthe soul بِتَطهيرِهاthrough its purification
اِرتاحَت النَفسُ بِتَطهيرِها
وَرَبُّهاand its Lord قاضٍdecrees بِتَدنيسِهاthat it be defiled
وَرَبُّها قاضٍ بِتَدنيسِها
The soul found ease in its purification,
The soul finds peace in its purification,
while its Lord decrees its defilement.
While its Lord judges it for its defilement.
إِنif كانَتِis الدُنِّياthe world عَروساًa bride تُرىis seen
إِن كانَتِ الدُنِّيا عَروساً تُرى
فَلِتَنصَرِفthen let her depart عَنكَfrom you بِتَعنيسِهاby leaving her a spinster
فَلِتَنصَرِف عَنكَ بِتَعنيسِها
If the world is seen as a bride,
If this world seems a bride to you,
then let her depart from you, left a spinster.
Then turn away from it with its vilification.
كَالغولِlike a ghoul غالَتكَshe destroyed you بِتَلوينِهاthrough her changing guises
كَالغولِ غالَتكَ بِتَلوينِها
بَينَbetween تَقَدّيهاher advancing وَتَبنيسِهاand her retreating
بَينَ تَقَدّيها وَتَبنيسِها
Like a ghoul, she destroyed you with her changing guises,
It has fooled you like a ghoul with its disguises,
between her advancing and retreating.
Between its ostentation and debasement.
كَمhow often آنَسَتنيshe comforted me بَعدَafter إيحاشِهاher making me desolate
كَم آنَسَتني بَعدَ إيحاشِها
وَأَوحَشَتنيand she made me desolate بَعدَafter تَأنيسِهاher comforting me
وَأَوحَشَتني بَعدَ تَأنيسِها
How often she comforted me after making me desolate,
How it brought me comfort after its seclusion,
and made me desolate after comforting me.
Then made me lonely after its socialization.
ضَعيفُهاher weakling مِثلُlike فَراa wild ass نَيسَبٍan open road
ضَعيفُها مِثلُ فَرا نَيسَبٍ
فَرَّfled حِذاراًin fear مِنof فَرانيسِهاher lions
فَرَّ حِذاراً مِن فَرانيسِها
Her weakling is like a wild ass on an open road,
Its weakness is like an oleander’s weakness,
fleeing in fear of her lions.
So flee far from the oleander’s poison.
يَكفيكَsuffices for you طَعمٌfood جِنسُهُits kind واحِدٌone
يَكفيكَ طَعمٌ جِنسُهُ واحِدٌ
أَطعِمَةٌfoods ضَرَّتhave harmed بِتَجنيسِهاthrough their varied kinds
أَطعِمَةٌ ضَرَّت بِتَجنيسِها
Food of a single kind suffices for you;
One kind of taste is enough for you,
foods have done harm through their variety.
Foods have harmed you with their variety.
وَالثَوبُand the garment فيin أَرضِكَyour land وَخشِهاits coarse sort
وَالثَوبُ في أَرضِكَ وَخشِها
يُغنيكَsuffices for you عَنinstead of أَثوابِgarments تِنَّيسهاher Tinnis
يُغنيكَ عَن أَثوابِ تِنَّيسها
And a coarse garment from your own land
And a garment in your land and its wool
spares you the need for garments from her Tinnis.
Suffices you instead of Tinnis’ clothes.
كَمhow many مِنof عَرىopen ground ناسٍpeople كَساclothed أَهلُهُits inhabitants
كَم مِن عَرى ناسٍ كَسا أَهلُهُ
نِسوَتَهُمtheir women بِرسَcotton عَرانيسِهاher cotton stalks
نِسوَتَهُم بِرسَ عَرانيسِها
In many a people's open tract, its inhabitants clothed
How many family bonds have been severed
their women in cotton from her stalks.
By their women's obsession with necklaces.
