لَقَد حَرَصوا عَلى الدُنِّيا فَبادوا

لَقَد حَرَصوا عَلى الدُنِّيا فَبادوا

فَلا تَكُ في الحَياةِ مِنَ الحِراصِ

فَلا تَكُ في الحَياةِ مِنَ الحِراصِ

Indeed, they were greedy for this world, then perished.

They were so keen on worldly pleasures, and perished,

So do not be among the greedy in life.

So do not be too greedy in life.

وَأَودِعهُم عَلى كُرهٍ ثَراهُم

وَأَودِعهُم عَلى كُرهٍ ثَراهُم

فَأَرضُ القَومِ خالِيَةُ العِراصِ

فَأَرضُ القَومِ خالِيَةُ العِراصِ

And reluctantly lay them in their earth.

Reluctantly they were laid to rest in their graves,

For the courtyards of the people's land lie empty.

While the land of the people was left with no mourners.

تُصَدِّقُ مَن أَتاكَ بِغَيرِ صِدقٍ

تُصَدِّقُ مَن أَتاكَ بِغَيرِ صِدقٍ

وَما أَولى أَمينَكَ بِاِختِراصِ

وَما أَولى أَمينَكَ بِاِختِراصِ

You believe whoever comes to you without truth,

You believe those who come to you with lies,

and how apt your trusted one is to fabricate lies!

Yet how can your close friend be more deserving of doubt?

وَلَيسَ أَخوكَ إِلّا لَيثَ غابٍ

وَلَيسَ أَخوكَ إِلّا لَيثَ غابٍ

يَسورُ إِلى اِفتِراسِكَ بِاِفتِراصِ

يَسورُ إِلى اِفتِراسِكَ بِاِفتِراصِ

And your brother is nothing but a lion of the forest,

Your brother is but a lurking lion,

who springs to devour you, seizing his chance.

Who stalks you, awaiting his chance to pounce.
