Did you tell me of Waqid and Ibn Jamrah,
and the house of Shihab? Every flame is quenched.
وَماand not الناسُthe people إِلّاexcept خائِفوthose who fear اللَهَGod وَحدَهُHim alone
إِذاwhen وَقَعَfell التُمِيُّthe coin فيinto كَفِّpalm of ناقِدِan assayer
And people fear none but God alone
when the coin falls into an assayer's palm.
رَقَواthey climbed وَرَقَدناand we slept فَاِعتَلواso they rose هُوَيَّناgently

They climbed, and we slept; so they rose gently.
And those ascents are unlike these resting places.

Parting from pearls has given you, without stint,
the Pleiades' necklace, or the peerless one among the Farqad stars.
إِذاif خَلَجَتنيsnatched me مِنfrom حَياةٍlife مَنيَّةٌdeath

If death snatches me from life,
then I bear no grudge against the hostile oppressor.
وَأَفرَقُand I dread مِنof يَومٍa day تُصَمُّare deafened غَواتُهُits wayward ones

And I dread a day whose wayward ones are deafened,
so they wail as bereaved women wail.
