The worst trees I have known of

Are trees that bore people as fruit.

They bore eagle young and crows,

And brought forth people of diverse kinds.

    Each one's ribs concealed

A rebellious demon, slinking away within the breast.

They bore nothing sweet or fragrant,

    But injuries and filth.

Our lot is weariness; and does

    Estrangement bring companionship?

Take a sharp sword, Saʿd, or a pen,

And take a spindle, O Daʿd.
