    Our pleasures are Time's camels, taken

    by the ruthless one among us, who is a camel-raider.

    And I see suffering befall a man in proportion to

    what he drinks of the daughter of grape-clusters.

    And the lord of peoples has, at his veil,

    an innate disposition that reason fights and wars against.

    في كُلِّ نَفسٍ مِنهُ عِرقٌ ضاربُ

    And evil is an instinct in the ancient forefather;

    in every soul, a vein of it throbs.
