أَوفِpay in full دُيونيmy debts وَخَلِّand leave alone أَقراضيmy loans
مِثلُكَone like you لاnot يَهتَديfinds his way لِأَغراضيto my aims
Pay my debts, and leave my loans alone.
Pay my debts and release my loans
One like you cannot fathom my aims.
The likes of you are not guided to my purposes
ماwhat لِبَنيwith the sons of آدَمٍAdam غَدواhave become أُمَماًpeoples
لَهُمthey have عُروضٌworldly goods بِغَيرِwithout أَعراضِhonor
What ails Adam's sons, who have become peoples,
Why have the sons of Adam become nations
With worldly goods but no honor?
With rhythms that have no meanings
كَمhow many a رَجُلٍman ماطَلَتhas kept waiting مَنيَّتُهُhis death
قَليلَlittle مالٍwealth كَثيرَmany أَمراضِailments
How many a man his death has kept waiting,
How many men's wishes were delayed
With little wealth and many ailments,
Little money, much sickness

Yet he is enamored of his world, passionately attached,
And he is infatuated with his world, tired
Content to hunt its game with an unfletched arrow.
Satisfied with the scraps of its game
حَلَّتadorned نِحاسَthe copper of الناموسِpretence فِضَّةُthe silver of شَيgray hair (word continues)
بٍ(completion of 'gray hair') لَكَfor you حَلَّتsweetened هَديدَthe clatter of مِقراضِscissors
The copper of pretence was adorned by the silver of gray—
The brass of the law became the silver of a boy for you
—hair for you; it sweetened the clatter of scissors.
It made the shiny gifts tarnished
لَمdid not تَرضَapprove ذاكَthat الفَتاةُthe girl عَنكَfrom you وَلاand not
رَبُّكَyour Lord فيماwith what فَعَلتَهُyou did it راضِpleased
The girl was not pleased with that from you, nor
That girl was not pleased with you, nor was your Lord
Is your Lord pleased with what you did:
With what you have done, satisfied
قَصّاًclipping وَخَضباًand dyeing لِأَعيُنٍfor eyes لُمُحٍquick-glancing
وَلَمand did not يَزِدهِنَّincrease in them غَيرَanything but إِعراضِaversion
Clipping and dyeing for quick-glancing eyes,
Cutting and dyeing eyes that are sharp
And it only increased their aversion.
And nothing increased them but aversion
