بِنتُ عَنِ الدُنيا وَلا بِنتَ لي

I have parted from the world, and have no daughter
in it, nor a wife, nor a sister.

And I have borne a burden of sin that
Bactrian camels are unable to carry.

If they praise me, their praise pains me,
and I imagine I have sunk into the earth.

My body is filth, so it did not delight me
that I was anointed with the musk of speech.
مِنfrom وَسَخٍfilth صاغَfashioned الفَتىthe young man رَبُّهُhis Lord
مِن وَسَخٍ صاغَ الفَتى رَبُّهُ

فَلا يَقولَنَّ تَوَسَّختُ
From filth his Lord fashioned the young man,
so let him not say, “I have become soiled.”

And fortune in this life bestowed high rank,
but there is no fortune in the hereafter.

يَبينُ فيها الجَزلُ وَالشَختُ
Thus they said; and their accounts
show both the substantial and the flimsy.

سَأَلتُ عَن قَومٍ وَأَرَّختُ
If a bearer of news came from the people of decay,
I would ask about people and record their history:

Did those who labored for Paradise attain it?
And did Nawbakht dwell in the Fire?

And injustice is that you must answer for what
Bahram and Baydakht have wrought against you.

And one part of this universe comes from another:
Were it not for sunlight, there would be no moonlight.
