لَهَفي عَلى لَيلَةٍ وَيَومٍ

لَهَفي عَلى لَيلَةٍ وَيَومٍ

تَأَلَّفَت مِنهُما الشُهورُ

تَأَلَّفَت مِنهُما الشُهورُ

Alas for a night and a day,

Longing for a night and day

from which the months were formed,

From which months are composed,

وَأُلفِيا عُنصُرَي زَمانٍ

وَأُلفِيا عُنصُرَي زَمانٍ

لَيسَ لِأَسرارِهِ ظُهورُ

لَيسَ لِأَسرارِهِ ظُهورُ

and both were found to be the two elements of time,

And two dear times,

whose secrets are not revealed.

Whose secrets do not appear.

قَد أَصبَحَ الدينُ مُضمَحِلّاً

قَد أَصبَحَ الدينُ مُضمَحِلّاً

وَغَيَّرَت آيَهُ الدُهورُ

وَغَيَّرَت آيَهُ الدُهورُ

Religion has indeed fallen into decline,

Religion has become weakened,

and the ages have altered its signs.

And the verses of time have changed it.

فَلا زَكاةٌ وَلا صِيامٌ

فَلا زَكاةٌ وَلا صِيامٌ

ولا صَلاةٌ وَلا طَهورُ

ولا صَلاةٌ وَلا طَهورُ

So there is neither almsgiving nor fasting,

So there is no almsgiving, no fasting,

nor prayer nor ritual purification.

No prayer, and no purification.

وَاِعتاضَ حِلَّ النِكاحِ قَومٌ

وَاِعتاضَ حِلَّ النِكاحِ قَومٌ

بِنُسوَةٍ ما لَها مُهورُ

بِنُسوَةٍ ما لَها مُهورُ

And some people have exchanged lawful marriage

And a people have disputed the legality of marriage

for women who have no bridal dowers.

With women who have no dowries.
