جُفونٌeyelids ماnot تُساعِدُhelp بِاِنهِمالِby streaming with tears
Those who hold back from giving are blamed—even
The withholder of giving is blamed until
Eyelids that will not help by letting tears flow.
Eyelids that do not help with blinking
أَسيئيdo ill فيin فِعالٍdeeds أَوor كَلامٍspeech
فَقَدfor indeed جَرَّبتِyou have tested صَبريmy patience وَاِحتِماليand my endurance
Do ill in deed or speech;
Whether I acted poorly in deed or speech
For you have tested my patience and endurance.
You have tested my patience and endurance
إِذاif الحَيَوانُthe living creature فُضَّis removed العَقلُreason مِنهُfrom it
فَماthen what فَضلُsuperiority الأَنيسِthe human being عَلىover النِمالِthe ants
If reason is taken from a living creature,
When the animal's intellect departs from it
Then what superiority has a human over ants?
What virtue has a companion over a camel?
أَرىI see زَمَناًtime تَقادَمَhas grown old غَيرَnot فانٍpassing away
فَسُبحانَso glory be to المُهَيمِنِthe Guardian ذيpossessor of الكَمالِperfection
I see time grown ancient, yet not passing away;
I see time passing by, not vanishing
So glory to the Guardian, possessor of perfection!
Glory to the Overseer of Perfection
قَدِindeed اِكتَحَلَتhave put on kohl عُيونٌeyes لِلثُرَيّاof the Pleiades
بِماwith what يُربيexceeds عَلىover كُثُبِdunes الرِمالِthe sands
The eyes of the Pleiades have been lined with kohl
Eyes have lined with kohl for wealth
With what exceeds the dunes of sand.
With what is nurtured on the dunes' ridges
غَدَوناwe set out سائِرينَtraveling عَلىin وِفازٍhaste
We set out, traveling in haste,
In the morning we walked the wilderness
Sober, like drunken drinkers,
Vigilant like the drinkers of camel milk
عَلَىon الفَرَسَينِthe two horses لاnot فَرَسَيtwo horses of رِهانٍa race
أَوِor الجَمَلَينِthe two camels لَيساthey are not كَالجِمالِlike camels
On the two horses—not two horses in a race—
Not two riding horses or a wager
Or the two camels, which are not like camels.
Nor two camels akin to perfection
فَلاso let not يُعجَبbe impressed بِصورَتِهِby his form جَميلٌa handsome man
فَإِنَّfor indeed القُبحَugliness يُطوىis folded away كَالجَمالِlike beauty
So let no handsome man admire his own form;
So let not the beautiful pride in their image
For ugliness is folded away like beauty.
For ugliness can be folded like beauty
وَماand what غَضَبيmy anger إِذاwhen جَرَتِtake their course القَضاياdecrees
بِتَفضيلِby preferring اليَمينِthe right عَلىover الشِمالِthe left
And why should I be angry when decrees take their course,
I am not angry when events unfold
Favoring the right over the left?
With preferring right over left
كَذاكَthus الدَهرُtime إِظلامٌdarkness وَصُبحٌand dawn
وَريحٌand a wind مِنfrom جَنوبٍthe south أَوor شِمالِthe north
Such is time: darkness and dawn,
Thus is the passage of time, darkness and dawn
And wind from the south or the north.
And wind from south or north
بِلاwithout مالٍwealth عَنِfrom الدُنياthis world رَحيليmy departure
وَصُعلوكاًand as a pauper خَرَجتُI came forth بِغَيرِwithout مالِwealth
Without wealth I leave this world,
With no money I departed the world
And as a pauper I came forth, without wealth.
And destitute I left without wealth
