لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed أَوضَعتَyou hastened فيin الغَيِّerror بُرهَةًfor a while
فَماso why لَكَwith you فيin رَكبِthe caravan of التُقىpiety غَيرَnot موضِعِhastening
By my life, you have indeed hastened in error for a while;
so why are you not hastening in the caravan of piety?
وَكَمand how often هُدَّwas shattered مِنof ثَهَلانَThahlan شامِخُthe towering height of طَودِهِits mountain
وَلَكِنand yet تَرىyou see ثَهلانَThahlan لَمdid not يَتَضَعضَعِtotter
And how often Thahlan’s towering summit has been shattered,
yet you see Thahlan has not tottered.
حَلَبتَyou milked الزَمانَTime العَودَthe old camel أَشطُرَthe udder-halves of ثِرَّةٍa bountiful she-camel
صَفيٍّrich in milk وَماand not تَنفَكُّyou break free مِنfrom جَهلِthe ignorance of مُرضِعِone who suckles
You have milked Time, that old camel, as one milks a bountiful she-camel’s teats,
rich in milk—yet you never escape the ignorance of one who suckles.
فَدَعso leave عَنكَaway from yourself ذِكرَmention of البارِقيَّةِthe Bariqi woman تَعتَزيshe traces her origin
لِبارِقِto Bariq حَيٍّa tribe أَوor لِبارِقِto Bariq مَوضِعِa place
So leave aside mention of the Bariqi woman, who traces her origin
to Bariq, a tribe, or to Bariq, a place.
إِذاif خَضَعَتbowed أَعناقُthe necks of رَهطٍa band of people لِكِفرِهِمbecause of their unbelief
فَأعناقُthen the necks of طُلّابِthe seekers of الهُدىguidance غَيرُnot خُضَّعِbowed
If a people’s necks bow because of their unbelief,
then the necks of those seeking guidance are not bowed.
