Does a nightfarer's star know of a calamity

brought by time, or does its night visitor have no concern for humankind?

And is the green sky's Farqad, in the firmament, certain

that its brother will, after a time, part from it?

Calamities have not kept it awake; yet each of us,

when disaster strikes, stays awake through the night, sleepless.

Indeed, age after age has passed, all of it

pitch-dark nights: its sun has never risen with dawn.

Things have changed, yet dominion remains firm,

its western reaches undiminished, and its eastern reaches.

It is willed: its pens have run and raced

at a command, and its scrolls have dried with the decree.

And did Kisra escape Time, surrounded by

his satraps—or Caesar with his patricians?

Has the lightning of this death glorified its Lord?

Yes, and its hillocks and rocky heights lent their aid.

    فَمَن نالَهُ مِن أَهلِها فَهُوَ سارِقُه

    And your world is not made for joy;

so whoever among its people gains it has stolen it.

And I have lived so long—if only you could see life!—that it appeared to me

as dust, its shreds like a spider's web.

So fear the oppressed one's prayer: his supplication

reaches the One veiled in light, and pierces His veil.

The king of the earth deceives until, when there comes

his death, his tricks avail him nothing.
