وَفائِزٌ مَن جَدُّهُ مُقبِلُ
How often the world counsels us, yet we do not heed!
And he succeeds whose fortune favors him.

past, present, and still to come.

The seas have become mountains in our age—
this age—just as the mountains have become seas.

So leave the rulers to their pleasures;
for truffles and acacia pods suffice us.

if there is no large drinking bowl among us.

People have traded on their Qur'an,
and feigned nobility in ignorance, yet became no nobler.

And what is transmitted from ʿĀṣim is not
what Qunbul related from his teacher.

The young ibex on the peak are not safe from
waking with ropes fastened to them.

in life, without seeking more Quṭrubbul wine.

And the Fadhdh lot suffices you if you miss the Ra-
qīb, the Nāfis, and the Musbil lots.

If Time spoke, it would satirize its people
as though it were al-Rūmī or Diʿbil.

And, by my life, it is an accomplished poet
in deed, but its speech is barren.

Never envy people, on any day, for
what they eat in hearty mouthfuls, and what clothes they wear.

Life's bough surely withers, even if
it had Mount Yadhbul among its leaves.

Someone ignorant sought to set us straight,
though we are diverse from the moment we are conceived.

An old man's sons dislike supporting him;
and do cubs provide for lions?
