And many a beautiful woman in a glowering tyrant’s house
A songstress in an oppressor’s abode
Is adorned with bracelets and earrings from what was not rightfully due.
Adorned with what she did not earn, disheveled

فَهَل أَمِنَت مِن لَدغِهِ حينَ تُبعَثُ
A serpent of gold is fashioned for her among her ornaments;
Her jewelry is made from the tears of the oppressed
Is she, then, safe from its bite when she is resurrected?
Did she feel safe from their bites when resurrected?
