Your world has beauty, although I
see her beauty as a fading beauty.
فَماso not طُلِّقَتwas divorced هِيَshe بَلrather طَلَّقَتdid the divorcing
وَلَستَand you are not بِأَوَّلِthe first of مَنthose who طُلِّقاwas divorced
So it was not she who was divorced; rather, she did the divorcing,
and you are not the first to have been divorced.
فَلاso do not تَأسَفَنَّever grieve عَلىover مَطلَبٍsomething sought

يَفوتُslips away إِذاwhen بابُهُits door أُغلِقاis shut
So never grieve over something sought
that slips away when its door is shut.

I see Aleppo held by Salih,
and Sinan has ranged over Jilliq;

and Hassan, among the two ancestral branches of Tayyi',
directs piebald Time through his might.

and it became anointed with blood.
وَماand what يَنفَعُbenefits الكاعِبَthe nubile maiden المُستَباthe captive (word continues)

And what use to the captive maiden
are heads split upon a keen sword?

And a slain man went unavenged and unremembered,
and a captive was shackled and never released.

And how many a man with a family she has left alone,
and how many a rich man she has left destitute,

And their time was no poet,
yet it never ceased to work wonders.
إِذاif كانَis هَذاthis فِعالُthe deeds of الزَمانِTime

If such are the deeds of Time,
then madness lies hidden within it.
فَلَيتَso would that السِمّاكَينِthe two Simak stars لَمnot يَطلُعاhad both risen

وَلَيتَand would that المُنيرَينِthe two luminaries (sun and moon) لَمnot يُخلَقاhad both been created
So would that the two Simak stars had never risen,
and would that the two luminaries had never been created!
