To God I complain of a heart that will not obey me,
To God I complain of a pain that disobeys me,
and a world of evil in which no one is rightly guided.
And of a world that has no guide within it.

Intellect lies in ruins, like deserted dwellings,
Neglect, like a house whose dwellers have gone, wears it away,
and ignorance is built high, like inhabited homes.
And ignorance, like tenants installed, has rebuilt it.

People's judgment has indeed been lost since Adam's time—
For certain, the patience of mankind has been lost since Adam,
so is anyone seeking to recover it from that straying?
Could it be, through that loss, that I have been guided?
