قَدindeed صَحِبناwe have accompanied الزَمانَtime بِالرَغمِdespite unwillingness مِنّاon our part
وَهوَand it يُرديslays كَماas عَلِمتَyou know الصَحاباthe companions
We have kept company with time against our will,
And, as you know, it slays its companions.
وَحَلَلناand we dwelt المَضيقَthe narrow place ثُمَّthen أَتَيناwe came to الرَحبَthe open space
لَوif only دامَlasted تَركُناleaving us وَالرِحاباwith the wide expanses
We dwelt in confinement, then came into the open—
if only we could be left in the wide expanses forever.
وَالجُسومُand the bodies التُرابُdust تَحياlive بِسُقياthrough watering
فَلِهَذاso for this reason قُلناwe said سُقيتِmay you be watered السَحاباthe clouds
And bodies are dust: they live when watered;
So we said: 'May you be watered by the clouds.'
قَدindeed رَضَيناwe accepted الشُحوبَpallor لَوif كانَwere صَرفُvicissitudes of الدَهtime (first fragment)
رِtime (final fragment) يَرضىis content with لِلأَوجُهِfor faces الإِشحاباmaking pale
We would accept pallor, if the vicissitudes of time
were content with making faces pale.
وَضَحِكناand we laughed وَلَيسَand there is not ماwhat يوجِبُwarrants الضَحlaughter (first fragment)
كَlaughter (final fragment) لَدَيناwith us بَلrather ماwhat يَهيجُarouses اِنتِحاباsobbing
And we laughed, though there is nothing to warrant laughter
for us—only what arouses sobbing.
كَمhow many a أَميرٍprince أُميرَwas tossed about فيin عاصِفاتٍstorm winds
بَعدَماafter حابَhe sinned فيin الحَياةِlife وَحابىand showed favoritism
How many a prince was tossed about in storm winds,
After he sinned in life and showed favoritism.
