قَدindeed أَسرَفَwent to excess الإِنسُhumankind فيin الدَعوىclaims بِجَهلِهِمُthrough their ignorance
حَتّىeven to the point that اِدَّعواthey claimed أَنَّهُمthat they لِلخَلقِover creation أَربابُlords
Humankind has made extravagant claims in its ignorance,
even claiming to be lords of creation.

Their attachment to pleasures remained unbroken
throughout life, though these people have no sense.

لَهاthey have بَحَثِّيَat my urging تَقريبٌa canter وَإِخبابُand a trot
Swifter than horses are the hopes I steer;
at my urging, they canter and trot.
فيwithin طاقَةِthe capacity of النَفسِthe soul أَنto تُعنىbe concerned بِمَنزِلِهاwith its dwelling

حَتّىuntil يُجافَis shut عَلَيهاover it لِلثَرىinto the earth بابُa door
It is within the soul's power to tend its dwelling
until a door into the earth is shut over it.
فَاِجعَلso keep نِساءَكَyour women إِنif أُعطيتَyou are given مَقدِرَةًpower
كَذاكَin that same way وَاِحذَرand beware فَلِلمِقدارِfor fate has أَسبابُmeans
So keep your women, if you are given the power,
in that same way; beware, for fate has its means.
وَكَمand how many خَنَتbetrayed مِنof هَجولٍa wanton woman حُجِّبَتwas veiled وَوَفَتand kept faith

Many a veiled wanton has betrayed, while faith has been kept
by many a freeborn woman with no cloak visible to the eye.

هَذاthis المَحَلُّabode بِماby what تَخشاهُyou dread it مِربابُcontinually beset
Harm from time is coupled for us with harm;
this abode is ever beset by what you dread.

Good visits us at intervals, or keeps away from us;
but is there any respite from what humankind hates?
وَقَدand indeed أَساءَdid wrong رِجالٌmen أَحسَنواdo good فَقُلواthen speak

وَأَجمَلواand be gracious فَإِذاand behold الأَعداءُenemies أَحبابُfriends
Men have done wrong; do good, then speak,
and be gracious—and behold, enemies are friends.
فَاِنفَعso benefit أَخاكَyour brother عَلىdespite ضُعفٍweakness تُحِسُّyou are aware بِهِof it

So help your brother despite the weakness you feel;
indeed, the breeze keeps blowing for the spirit's benefit.
