نُفوسٌsouls لِلقِيامَةِtoward the Resurrection تَشرَئِبُcrane their necks
وَغَيٌّand error فيin البَطالَةِidleness مُتلَئِبُّpersisting steadily
Souls crane their necks toward the Resurrection,
yet error persists in idleness.
تَأَبّىyou refuse أَنto تَجيءَapproach الخَيرَgoodness يَوماًever
وَأَنتَand you لِيَومِfor a day of غُفرانٍforgiveness تَئِبُّyou make ready
You refuse ever to do good,
while you make ready for a day of forgiveness.
فَلاso do not يَغرُركَdeceive you بِشرٌa cheerful face مِنfrom صَديقٍa friend
فَإِنَّfor indeed ضَميرَهُhis inner self إِحَنٌgrudges وَخَبُّand deceit
So let no friend's cheerful face deceive you,
for his heart harbors grudges and deceit.
وَإِنَّand indeed الناسَpeople طِفلٌa child أَوor كَبيرٌan adult
يَشيبُgrows gray عَلىin الغَوايَةِwaywardness أَوor يَشِبُّgrows up
And people, whether children or adults,
grow gray in waywardness, or grow up in it.
تُحِبُّyou love حَياتَكَyour life الدُنياworldly سَفاهاًfoolishly
وَماand not جادَتit gave generously عَلَيكَupon you بِماwith what تُحِبُّyou love
You foolishly love your worldly life,
yet it has not bestowed on you what you love.
وَإِنَّكand indeed you مُنذُsince كَونِthe becoming of النَفسِthe soul عَنساًa sturdy she-camel
لَتوضِعُyou surely urge on swiftly فيin الضَلالَةِerror أَوor تُخِبُّyou set trotting
And ever since your soul became a sturdy she-camel,
you have surely driven it swiftly through error, or made it trot.
وَإِنand even if طالَlasts long الرُقادُsleep مِنَamong البَراياthe creatures
فَإِنَّthen indeed الراقِدينَthe sleepers لَهُمthey have مَهَبُّan awakening
Though the creatures' sleep lasts long,
the sleepers still have an awakening.
غَرامُكَyour infatuation بِالفَتاةِwith the maiden خَنىًlewdness وَغَمٌّand grief
وَلَيسَand does not يَسَرُّgladden مَنthe one who يَشتاقُyearns غِبُّaftermath
Your infatuation with the maiden is lewdness and grief,
and its aftermath does not gladden the one who yearns.
لَوif أَنَّthat سَوادَthe blackness of كَيوانٍKaywan (Saturn) خِضابٌdye
بِكَفِّكَupon your palm وَالسُهىand al-Suha (Alcor) فيin الأُذنِthe ear حَبُّa bead
If Kaywan's blackness were dye
upon your palm, and al-Suha a bead in your ear,
لَماwould not نَجّاكَsave you مِنfrom غَيرِthe vicissitudes of اللَياليthe nights
سَناءٌglory فارِعٌtowering وَغِنىًand wealth مُرِبُّenduring
you would not be saved from the nights' vicissitudes
by towering glory and enduring wealth.
وَماand not يَحميكَprotects you عِزٌّmight إِنif تَسَبّىyou are taken captive
وَلَوand even if أَنَّthat الظَلامَdarkness عَلَيكَover you سِبُّa fine cloth
And no might protects you if you are taken captive,
even if darkness were a veil over you.
أَرىI see جِنحَthe flank of الدُجىnight's darkness أَوفىfuller جَناحاًin wing
وَماتَand died غُرابُهُits raven الجَونُblack المُرِبُّlingering
I see night's flank with a fuller wing,
and its lingering black raven has died.
فَماso what لِلنَسرِails the Eagle لَيسَdoes not يَطيرُfly فيهِin it
وَعَقرَبُهُand its Scorpion المُضِبَّةُhiding in its hole لاdoes not تَدُبُّcrawl
So what ails the Eagle, that it does not fly in it,
while its lurking Scorpion does not crawl?
أَيَجلوdoes it reveal? الشَمسَthe sun لِلرائيto the beholder نَهارٌdaylight
فَقَدfor indeed شَرَقَتit has risen وَمَشرِقُهاand its rising-place مُضِبُّfog-bound
Does daylight reveal the sun to the beholder?
For it has risen, but its rising-place is fog-bound.
وَلَمand did not يَدفَعavert رَدىthe death of سُقراطَSocrates لَفظٌspeech

وَلاnor بِقراطُHippocrates حامىdefended عَنهُon his behalf طِبُّmedicine
And speech did not avert the death of Socrates,
nor did medicine defend Hippocrates.
إِذاif آسَيتَنيyou tend me بِشَفاًat the brink صَريعاًstricken
فَدَعنيthen leave me كُلُّevery ذيpossessor of أَمَلٍhope يَتِبُّperishes
If you tend me, stricken at the brink,
then leave me: every bearer of hope perishes.
وَلاand do not تَذبُبdrive away هُناكَthere الطَيرَthe birds عَنّيfrom me
ولاnor تَبلُلmoisten يَداكَyour two hands فَماًa mouth يَذِبُّdries up
And do not drive the birds away from me there,
nor let your hands moisten a mouth that is drying up.
