وَجَدناwe found اِختِلافاًdisagreement بَينَناamong us فيconcerning إِلَهَناour God
وَجَدنا اِختِلافاً بَينَنا في إِلَهَنا
وَفيand concerning غَيرِهِwhat is other than Him عِزَّis mighty الَّذيHe who جَلَّis exalted وَاِتَّحَدand is one
وَفي غَيرِهِ عِزَّ الَّذي جَلَّ وَاِتَّحَد
We found disagreement among us concerning our God,
We found differences between us in our God,
and concerning other things—mighty is He who is exalted and one.
And in other things, the Mighty One, Glorious and One.
لَناfor us جُمعَةٌFriday وَالسَبتُand the Sabbath يُدعىis designated لِأُمَّةٍfor a community
لَنا جُمعَةٌ وَالسَبتُ يُدعى لِأُمَّةٍ
أَطافَتgathered بِموسىaround Moses وَالنَصارىand the Christians لَهاfor them الأَحَدSunday
أَطافَت بِموسى وَالنَصارى لَها الأَحَد
Friday is ours; the Sabbath is designated for a community
For us is Friday, and Saturday is called for a nation,
that gathered around Moses; the Christians have Sunday.
That encircled Moses, and Sunday is for the Christians.
فَهَلso is there لِبَواقيfor the rest of السَبعَةِthe seven الزُهرِthe radiant مَعشَرٌa community
فَهَل لِبَواقي السَبعَةِ الزُهرِ مَعشَرٌ
يَجُلّونَهاthey revere them مِمَّنamong those who تَنَسَّكَpracticed devotion أَوor جَحَدdisbelieved
يَجُلّونَها مِمَّن تَنَسَّكَ أَو جَحَد
So is there a community for the rest of the radiant seven
Do the rest of the seven days have groups,
that reveres them, among the devout or the unbelieving?
That revere them, whether ascetic or unbeliever?
تَقَرَّبَsought nearness to God ناسٌsome people بِالمُدامِthrough wine وَعِندَناand among us
تَقَرَّبَ ناسٌ بِالمُدامِ وَعِندَنا
عَلىin كُلِّevery حالٍcase أَنَّthat شارِبَهاits drinker يُحَدّreceives the prescribed punishment
عَلى كُلِّ حالٍ أَنَّ شارِبَها يُحَدّ
Some people sought nearness to God through wine, while among us,
Some people draw near with wine, while for us
in every case, whoever drinks it receives the prescribed punishment.
In any case, the one who drinks it is limited.
وَماand not كَفَّهُمrestrained them عَنfrom شُربِهاdrinking it سوطُthe whip of ضارِبٍa flogger
وَما كَفَّهُم عَن شُربِها سوطُ ضارِبٍ
وَلاnor السَيفُthe sword إِنَّindeed السَيفَthe sword ينunclear; likely 'than' سوطِهِhis whip أَحَدّsharper
وَلا السَيفُ إِنَّ السَيفَ ين سوطِهِ أَحَدّ
And no flogger's whip kept them from drinking it,
And neither the whip of a striker stops them from drinking it,
nor the sword—indeed, the sword is sharper [than] his whip.
Nor the sword - indeed the sword is sharper than his whip!
