يَوماًever وَلاnor هَزَّmoved لِهَزّانِfor Hazzān
The lightning from Bāriq has not stirred me,
No lightning ever struck me, nor storm shook me,
Not once, nor moved me for Hazzān.
On any day, nor did any shaker shake me.
حَربَةُa spear زانٍbeechwood بِفُؤادِin the heart of الفَتىthe young man
خَيرٌbetter لَهُfor him مِنthan خَربَةِthe wrongdoing of الزانيthe adulterer
A beechwood spear in a young man's heart
The chastity of the young man's heart
Is better for him than the adulterer's wrongdoing.
Is better for him than the corruption of the adulterer.
لاnot أَشرَبُI drink الرَاحَwine وَلَوand even if

I do not drink wine, even if
I do not drink wine, even if
It were guaranteed to banish my anguish and sorrows,
It takes away the anguish and sorrows of my soul,
مُخَفِّفاًlightening ميزانَthe scales of حِلميmy reason بِهاwith it

Lightening with it the scales of my reason,
Lessening the balance of my patience with it,
As though my scales had not already grown light.
As if my balance had never been diminished.
عُمرٌa lifetime مَضىhas passed لاmay it not كانَhave been مِنof ذاهِبٍa departed thing
جَزَّيتُهُI repaid it شَرّاًwith evil وَجَزّانيand it repaid me
A lifetime has passed—would that this vanished thing had never been!
A life has passed, that was not of one who passes away,
I repaid it with evil, and it repaid me.
I dealt with it badly, and it dealt badly with me.
أُجامِلُI treat courteously الناسَpeople وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I

I am courteous to people; and were I
I indulge people, even though if
To reveal what lies hidden, it would disgrace me.
I revealed what was secret, it would shame me.

I grieved over my shortcomings, but what
I despaired of my own defects, but what
Appears in others has consoled me.
Appears in others did not make me desperate.
