القَلبُthe heart كَالماءِlike water وَالأَهواءُand desires طافِيَةٌfloating
عَلَيهِupon it مِثلَlike حَبابِbubbles الماءِwater فيin الماءِwater
The heart is like water, and desires float
The heart is like water, and passions float over it
Upon it, like water’s bubbles in water.
Like bubbles on water, changing it constantly.
مِنهُfrom it تَنَمَّتgrew وَيَأتيand comes ماthat which يُغَيِّرُهاchanges them
فَيُخلِقُthus wears out العَهدَthe bond مِنof هِندٍHind وَأَسماءِand Asma’
From it they grew, and something comes that changes them,
Out of it relationships sprout, only to shrivel later,
And so wears thin the bond with Hind and Asma’.
Creating covenants out of India and Asma.
وَالقَولُand speech كَالخَلقِlike creation مِنof سَيءٍbad وَمِنand of حَسَنٍgood
وَالناسُand people كَالدَهرِlike time مِنof نورٍlight وَظَلماءِand darkness
And speech is like creation: some bad and some good,
Words are like all creation, with good and evil,
And people are like time: light and darkness.
And people are like time itself, light and dark.
يُقالُit is said إِنَّthat زَماناًan age يَستَقيدُyields لَهُمto them
حَتّىuntil يُبَدِّلَreplaces مِنfrom بُؤسٍmisery بِنَعماءِwith prosperity
It is said that an age will yield to them,
It’s said there will come a time tailored for them
Until it replaces misery with prosperity,
When hardship turns to prosperity, woe to bounty.
وَيوجَدُand is found الصَقرُthe falcon فيconcerning الدَرماءِthe hare مُعتَقِداًholding a view
رَأيَthe view of اِمرِىءِImru’ القَيسِal-Qays فيconcerning عَمرو‘Amr بنِson of دَرماءِDarma’
And the falcon will be found regarding the hare
The falcon finds belief in the wilderness
As Imru’ al-Qays regarded ‘Amr ibn Darma’.
In Imru’ al-Qais’s view of Amr ibn Darima.

فَاِبغِso seek الوُرودَreaching water لِنَفسٍfor a soul ذاتَhaving أَظماءِperiods of thirst
But I do not think this will ever come to pass,
I don’t believe this will last forever,
So seek water for a soul beset by thirst.
So pluck roses for a soul of sorrows.
