Would that I knew what I shall meet at my death

and at my return, from the record of what I have sown.

Even if I forget, God counts what has been done

by my soul, of deeds both pure and tainted.

    أسباب صالحة الأعمال في رثث

    The cords of my sin have been firmly joined;

the cords of righteous deeds lie in tatters.

I find myself in the vast sea of hopes, tossed about

by waves of wishes, without a mast, upon a raft.

Then woe, unless from the Most Merciful there comes beforehand

safety for me, rescuing me from the rough ground.

Oh, the sorrow of a stumble to which no one says

'May you recover!'—and of a corrupt, ruined bargain!

If You do not shelter me, my God, from its deceit,

who can shield me from hostile aims and crushing distress?

My intention has clung to pardon from You, so do not

cut my hope and my intentions loose from their hold.

So make my hope, my God, not turn back,

and keep my sound recognition of my sin from unraveling.

My soul, Iblis, and the world—shield me from them, for they

are my bitterest enemies, and they are seekers of wickedness.

My inward parts are filled by the inspirer of burdens,

yet they hunger because they lack good things.

Protect me, God, from the heat of Hell, and

grant me bliss: the embrace of houris with dangling earrings.
