نصدwe turn away لنستبقيso we may preserve السرورjoy منthrough الصدturning away
Whenever we pass by the graves for a while,
When we pass by the graves one hour,
We turn away, to preserve our joy through turning away.
We laugh to preserve the joy against sadness.
حملناwe bore منof الآمالhopes فوقbeyond مطاقناour capacity
بناwith us لعبتthey toyed لعبthe playing المراوحthe fanning winds بالفردwith the solitary one
We have borne hopes beyond our capacity;
We carried hopes above our litters,
They toyed with us as the fanning winds toy with the solitary one.
Playing the game of passing time alone.
وزخرفتand adorned الدنياthe world لناfor us ماwhat يروقناdelights us
بمنظرهاwith its appearance المصميkilling outright ومطمعهاand its allure المرديruinous
And the world adorned for us what delights us,
The world adorned for us what pleases us
With its deadly appearance and its ruinous allure.
With its solemn view and its tempting decline.
ضحكناmocked us علىover الأعمالdeeds آمالناour hopes بهاin them
كضحكlike the mocking لعابspittle الشمسof the sun بالهايمat the wanderer المصديthe thirst-parched
Our hopes in our deeds have mocked us,
We laughed at deeds, our hopes in them
As the sun's spittle mocks the parched wanderer.
Like the laughing of playful sunbeams on barren hills.
إلامhow long وهذاwhile this الركبcaravan للحشرfor the Gathering أمّناhas headed toward us
وماand no مهتدguided person إِلاexcept برائدهthrough his scout المهديthe rightly guided
How long, when this caravan bound for the Gathering comes for us?
Why is this caravan bound for the resurrection, O protector,
And none finds the way except through his rightly guided scout.
When none guided but by its leading guide.
عسىmay it be that الوفدthe delegation لاقىmet اللَهGod راضpleased فإنناfor indeed we

May the delegation have met God well pleased; for we
May the delegation find God pleased, for we
Surely hope He will [favor us?] with the delegation's reward.
Hope He would reward the delegation.
أَياO أَسدlion الباريof the Creator نعزيكwe console you والأَسىand sorrow
لعمركby your life فيناin us منكbecause of you زادhas grown علىbeyond الحدthe limit
O lion of the Creator, we console you; and sorrow,
O lion of the Creator, we console you, grief
By your life, has grown in us because of you beyond all bounds.
Has in us, from you, exceeded the limit.
فحزنكfor your grief ياO نورlight الأَباضيof the Ibadi بعضهsome of it
ليحرقwould surely burn مناwithin us معلقthe seat الروحof the soul لاnot الجلدthe skin
For just part of your grief, O light of the Ibadi,
So your sorrow, O light of the Abadis, burns
Would surely burn the soul's very seat within us, not the skin.
The spirit attached to us, not the skin.
قسمناwe apportioned الأَسىthe sorrow حتىuntil أَخذناwe took أجلّهits greatest share
فلوso if حلit descended upon منthose who فيare in الغورthe lowlands أَحرقit would burn بالنجدin the highlands
We apportioned the sorrow until we took its greatest share;
We shared the grief until we took most of it
Were it to descend on those in the lowlands, it would burn even in the highlands.
If poured in the cave, it would have burned the plateau.

May you, worthy of praise, ask Him for His good pleasure,
May you - thanks to God - ask Him to be pleased
For us and for you, from Him, so that we may win praise.
With us and you, so we win praise.

May the grave of one now watered with tears be watered
The grave of one who quenched with tears
By persistent morning rains, true in lightning and thunder.
Has watered the plains, honest in lightning and thunder.

And it waters graves around it, a mercy from him,
By showers upon showers, never wavering in their pledge.
Faithful, faithful, of unchanging covenant.

Welcoming him with what pleases him, to the Garden of Eternity.
He met with what pleases to the eternal garden.

And may God bless him after Muhammad,
And God prayed upon him after Muhammad
The Prophet of guidance, the guide, Aminah's son, the rightly guided.
The prophet of guidance, leader, son of Amina the rightly-guided.
