When my needs lead me to a friend,

he turns aside from me, scowling.

But if he has need of something from me, he comes,

wagging his tail like a cat, wretched in his plight.

So, when I contemplated Time, comparing what had come

with the past—wretched is the man who makes no comparison.

And whoever does not guard his honor against intrigues—

intrigues have brought him what he does not welcome.

    وإن كثير الناس في النسانس

    Such is Time: if you reflect on it, calamity upon calamity;

and indeed, many people belong among the nasnas.

How admirable, then, is one endowed with beautiful qualities,

and whoever prizes the outcome strives for them.
