It bites me at night, at dawn, and in the forenoon,

while we linger through the night—what biting!

my veins, and my skin stiffens from the fierce biting.

I pass the night awake with the stars, fearing its bite,

as though I were being bitten, though I am not.

I called down a scorching wind upon it, to kill it,

and the west wind to sweep it into the privy.

and from all that is feared, to raise my throne for me,

and bring me back after my absence to a homeland

harder for enemies to grasp than loose wool.

I would not have left my home, journeying on foot.

the blackness of night's gloom nor the hand of thirst.

Yet my soul was not satisfied with worthless, shriveled dates.

By day and by night I drink the water of Zamzam,

draught upon draught, and sip upon sprinkle.

When I returned, they told me, 'Keep to Zamzam:

sup on its water—or, if you seek supper, sup!' [Final wording uncertain.]

May the generous Creator keep me returning to it

each year, even if I am carried on a bier.

For I cannot forget Layla, even if I were

to make my way to her among the [fangs?] of speckled serpents.

O my Master, O God, I call upon You in hope,

to bring me swiftly back to union with Layla,

and forgive my burdens and prolong contentment for me.

Oh, her good fortune! Oh, for contentment—and toward contentment I walk!
