Take heed: instrument nouns have kasra (i) on their mīm,

when it comes at the beginning and mīm is their first letter,

except for six instrument nouns, whose mīm takes ḍamma (u).

So here they are for you, made known and not unknown:

    a sturdy pestle, a nasal-medicine applicator, then an oil-pot,

    and a kohl-pot, moreover a sieve, then a sword.

As for those whose mīm takes either fatḥa (a) or kasra,

they are a ladder or a watering-vessel for a people granted respite.

With kasra they are instruments; with fatḥa, in their view,

according to the ruling they gave, they are taken to denote places.

As for those with kasra on the mīm and the middle root-letter,

when their pronounced pattern is called mifʿil,

there are two, they said: a slaughtering place, then ‘foul-smelling’.

So take this verse, which outdid what Jarwal said.
