Take comfort and be patient: everything perishes,

Except the One before whom the interwoven stars bow.

People are but mortals and sons of mortals,

And death's aftermath is deliverance and ruin.

No one goes before but a follower comes in his wake.

The road to death—everyone travels it.

Let the deluded not feel sure of living to old age,

Even if life's paths open wide before him.

For Luqman died, and his vultures died,

And their lifespans and paths did not endure.

Death is only a road—and what a road!

A fearsome one, along which we are all travelers.

No slave lives forever in the bitterest misery,

Nor any master in the sweetest life.

    Rich men die with humbled

Noses, just as destitute men have died.

We go out at evening and morning like grazing beasts,

While the claw of death's hand clutches life.

No pleasure exists that death does not destroy,

Nor any veils that death does not rend.

As though in death's hand were a sharpened sword,

For necks in the depths of humankind, which it severs.

Among the strangest things: a mortal consoles you

Over one who has died, while the consoled is mortal too.

Oh, if only our dead, and we, were like Rashid,

Who met death rejoicing and laughing,

Loving his Maker and loathing sin.

And a grieving person has neither lover nor hater.

He passed away, with love for him in every heart,

And no tears but those poured out for him.

As though the traces of his memory after his death

In every gathering were musk brought forth by one who grinds it.

He has not died who leaves us Salim after him,

And Ahmad, and his young, devout offspring.

For they are like radiant stars: if one star vanishes,

Another star appears, while night is black and pitch-dark.

Upon your guarded grave, O offspring of Ahmad,

May the teats of pitch-dark clouds pour in succession.
