O rain cloud, whose lightning was all night like a vein,
O you whose lightning flickers like sweat beads
And whose flicker was at times like the beating of the heart.
And at times throbs like a beating heart
وكلماand whenever افترّparted in a smile ثغرthe mouth of البرقthe lightning مبتسماًsmiling

Whenever lightning's mouth parted in a smile,
Whenever the lip of lightning smiles broadly
The cloud wept with it, its thunderbolts crashing down.
The clouds weep over it and its bolts pour down

Whenever the south wind contended there with the east wind,
Whenever the south winds wail in it
Its rain poured from the clouds upon the fragrant herbs.
My worries in anguish are like sweet basil

Whenever lightning faded, the east wind rekindled it, and then
When lightning loses its glow, the morning winds
Its lightning streaks began falling like scattered embers.
Shatter it like embers scattered, its sparks

And if thunder flagged, the south wind urged it on, and never
If thunder moans, the south winds provoke it
Did its she-camels cease their rumbling cries.
It does not stop gathering its bundles gracefully

Then heavy rain poured down where drizzle went before it,
The downpour where the rain leads it
And rain overflowed, its torrent sweeping round the hillocks.
And the drizzle floats, the clouds circle heavily

From the mountain-pegs' summits it brought down their white-footed ibex,
It descended from the hilltops, their highest points
Until its male ostriches raced beside it in al-Dahna.
Until the valleys match it in their depths

Then it covered the earth completely, leaving no sandy mound
It sheets the earth completely so that no depression
Without turning it into a hollow and submerging it.
Remains except it makes it an abyss and drowned

As though the horizon were a sea that kept on surging,
As if the horizon is a confused, dark shadow
Where the north wind beat against it with both her palms.
Where the north with its palms clashes with it

As if the sky adorns the earth with pearls
And the meadow with brocade whose patches were fresh and bright.
And the meadows with gray morning glories

As though the meadow, since its stars appeared,
As if when its stars shone, the meadows' panels
Were the sky's shimmer when its eastern lights spread.
Sparkled since its dawns have spread

The fragrance of lavender and arar flowers wafted through it,
The smell of flowers and bushes spreads in it
Its night-wandering breeze betrayed it, and its anemones burst open.
Its flag grew and its anemones split open

Powdered musk falls short of it; it is carried abroad
Beyond it is musk melted spreading in it
By the east wind, until its fragrance fills the earth.
The scent of acceptance, saturating the earth
أَباO father of المعاليhigh honors أَماis there not العتبىreconciliation لهاfor it أَمدan appointed term

O Abu al-Ma'ali, has reconciliation no appointed term
O highest aspirations, is there still for them
Leading to your favor? Perhaps I might outrun it.
A term until I attain your pleasure and precede it
قدindeed عيلwas exhausted صبريmy patience وسلوانيand my consolation قدindeed انقطعتhas ceased
فماso there are no لمروانfor Marwan توباتacts of repentance توافقهplease him
My patience is exhausted, and my consolation has ceased;
My patience has weakened and my solace is cut off
For Marwan has no acts of repentance that please him.
So how can Marwan's repentance match it
إِنif كُنتI was قدindeed صرتhave become مرواناًMarwan لديكin your eyes فقدthen sever
لطولbecause of the length of غيظكyour anger منfrom أَصلthe root علائقهhis ties
If I have become Marwan in your eyes, then sever
If in your eyes I have become like Marwan
His ties at their root, for your anger has lasted so long.
Due to your long resentment from its causes
أَوor كانَwas أَمركyour decree غيظاًanger ثمthen ينسخهsupersedes it

Or if your decree was anger and is then superseded
Or was it your anger then you nullified it
By another decree—I cannot bear the decree of anger—
With another order for I cannot endure anger

Then confirm for us your second decree, that we may follow it;
Confirm for us your second command that we may follow it
For you send it down among us and set it in order.
For you are its destination in us and its constructor

For God has given you purified virtues,
God has granted you purified morals
They grew pure, and He enjoined on you something never to forsake:
That have flourished and guided you to what does not depart it

To pardon and be pleased, and to restrain this anger,
You pardon, become pleased, and it is best to suppress
Is worthier and more fitting, now that its true nature is clear.
This anger when its realities have appeared
فماso what اعتذاركyour excuse منfor هذاthis وأَنتwhile you بهin it

وقارفand the committer of الذنبthe sin عنon account of توبrepentance توافقهyou agree with him
What excuse have you for this, when, in this matter,
What is your excuse in this while you are characterized by it
You accept the sinner upon repentance?
And the sinner of the sin does not repent to match it

Your anger has split my ribs and shaken me;
Your anger has shaken my ribs so it shook me
And because of it, my head has grayed along its partings.
And from it my head has grayed at its temples

And you are like the night: even if I went far away, you would overtake me.
You are like the night, if you come to me
And you fasten my rein with kindness.
While my leader, you are assured with kindness

Be like the Prophet toward Ka'b, when he accepted his excuse,
Be like the Prophet with Ka'b when he pardoned him
On the morning Ka'b came to him, though he had reviled him.
The next morning when he came to him while leading him
فقالand he said حرمتهhis inviolability عنديwith me كحرمتكمlike your inviolability

The Prophet said: "His protection with me is the same as yours;
He said, "His sanctity to me is like yours
Do not kill him, for now I set him free."
Do not kill him for I will now protect him"

Follow his practice, since you are his heir,
Follow his tradition as you are his heir
A successor—and, by my life, you follow in his steps.
By my life you are his successor and the one who will fulfill it

What earth could bear me if you were not pleased,
So which land when you are not pleased with it will carry me
And what sky's layers have led me astray?
And which pages have misguided me by its compositions
